Dr Derek Steeple MA, PhD

Professional training & Industrial Experience

  • Various business, management development and other training programmes (mainly at the TI Residential Training Centre, Woodbourne Grange and latterly at the GEC Management College, Dunchurch)
  • 14 years' industrial experience, mainly at senior management level, across the spectrum of engineering, operations, supply chain, commercial and general management
  • 12 years' university experience of lecturing, consultancy, business support, applied research, management development and training in management, manufacturing and supply chain management
  • 5 years' freelance consultancy and interim management experience. Experience in business recovery situations involving bank-driven corporate recovery, refinancing and Administration
  • 3 years' part-time Senior Research Fellow involving a variety of industry-based projects
  • Extensive experience of the automotive and aerospace industries. Experience of the rail, general engineering, foundry, plastics, capital goods, electronics, food processing, building products and “cut and sew” sectors. Substantial experience of working with SMEs and devising and implementing Lean operations. Great experience of implementing computerised manufacturing and financial planning and control systems and ensuring that appropriate procedures for data accuracy and timely and cost effective business operations are devised and implemented

Many bespoke in-company programmes, Chinese and Singapore residential programmes in UK, Visiting Professor at IESEG (Lille) 8 times, Ravensburg Berufsakadamie (Germany) twice, Osnabruck Fachhochschule (Germany)

Administrative Duties

  • Established weekend-based management development programme for manufacturing managers (PgC, PgD, MBA, Experience of identifying funding opportunities, arranging industrial collaboration, bid writing and project operation across a variety of funding streams (TCS/KTP, EPSRC, ESRC, ERDF, ESF, ADAPT, SME Community Initiative)
  • External examiner Kingston University MSc in AMS, programme manager MSc by Research, research centre director, head of subject group and department. Research, academic and partnership committee work Conference organisation and chair, 5 PhD examinations

Research Interests and Publications

Own consultancy and research interests include strategy, supply chain development, production planning and control, manufacturing and business process improvement, Lean Manufacturing, human resource development, advanced cost management, inter- and intra-organisational behaviour and development.
